Local #399 Transportation Services

The nature of transportation in the entertainment industry (“the industry”) is significantly different from that of the general trucking business; the primary business for standard trucking companies is the transportation of a product from one pre-determined location to another. Entertainment industry transportation departments function as a support service, among many other departments, toward the overall production of a motion picture. The industry is a fast-paced, evolving environment, and drivers must remain agile as work assignments may change depending on the needs of the production. The main purpose of industry drivers is to transport crew members and filming equipment to the next filming location.

Contract Services assists the motion picture and television transportation departments by providing beneficial programs, such as skills training, substance testing, Roster administration, and the Hours of Service course.

Electronic Logging Device Exemption

Effective January 19, 2023, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) granted a renewal of the Motion Picture Association’s (MPA) five-year exemption from the electronic logging device (ELD) requirements for all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers providing transportation to or from a theatrical or television motion picture production site. MPA requested this exemption to allow these drivers to complete paper records of duty status (RODS) instead of using an ELD. The renewed exemption is effective January 19, 2023 and expires on January 19, 2028.
