Motion Picture Apprenticeship Programs
In accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Producers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 40, apprenticeship programs for the Wireman (Electrician) and the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Mechanic are currently being funded by Contract Services and administered by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (which is comprised of both management and labor representatives).
The Wireman (Electrician) Apprenticeship Program is a five-year program, consisting of classroom instruction and approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. The duties of the Wireman Apprentice focus on general studio electrical work including electrical construction of power and lighting; installation, maintenance testing and repairing of various electrical systems including motors and generators; installation, maintenance and repairing of intercommunication, public address, electric eye and signal systems; preparation of sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment; reading of diagrams and blueprints; and drafting of requisitions for electrical parts.
HVAC Apprenticeship Program is a four-year program, consisting of classroom instruction and approximately 8,000 hours of on-the-job training. The duties of the Air Conditioning Mechanic Apprentice focus on the maintenance and repair of various refrigeration systems and heating units, both permanent and portable, including refrigerators, ice-making machines and swamp coolers; ventilation motors and fans; pump motors; and water seals and electrical controls on boiler units.
